A Serious Law Firm For Serious Cases

Don't fall into the trap of distracted driving

Have you ever been in the car with a distracted driver? It is a bit unnerving, isn't it? The person keeps looking away from the road, engaging in plenty of nondriving activities that make you wonder just how safe you really are.

People often do not realize the danger they are putting themselves and others in when they do this. Multitasking is just such a big part of our world. People feel like it is natural and safe. Any driving instructor will tell you that that is not the case at all.

The reality is that anything that diverts your attention from the traffic around you is a risk. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gives examples of:

  • Using the navigational system or the GPS
  • Texting and driving
  • Talking on the phone
  • Using the entertainment system
  • Changing the radio station
  • Drinking anything, even nonalcoholic beverages
  • Eating and driving
  • Talking to passengers

Granted, many experts do note that texting worries them the most. It is so common and it makes people look away from the road for an average of five seconds. They drive 100 yards in that much time at 55 miles per hour.

Do not fall into this trap. Do not assume you can multitask. Remember that distraction takes lives. Put off anything you have to do until you arrive. In an emergency situation, pull over first.

While doing these things can help keep you safe, you also need to know that other drivers still suffer from plenty of distractions. If one of them causes an accident and injures you, make sure you look into your legal options to seek financial compensation.
